The Section 8 Homeownership Voucher program allows a person or family who is receiving rental assistance from MHA to get a special Section 8 voucher that can be used towards the purchase of a home. To qualify, the family or individual must have been a participant for at least one year, must be in good standing with MHA, must be employed full time unless they are disabled, and must be a first-time home buyer.

Participants must first complete a homeownership preparation class, such as that provided by Homeword.

The participant applies for a loan with a lender of their choice. The lender uses the voucher assistance in qualifying the family for a loan amount. The family may also take advantage of other first-time home-buyer programs.

After the participant closes on the loan, the voucher pays a portion of the mortgage payment similar to the portion paid to the landlord on their behalf in the rental assistance program.
